Meanwhile, in downtown Suva, Mere was going through similar thoughts in her mind. “I have grown to love Jacob and want to be with him. Would he even want to stay in Fiji? Could he stay in Fiji? What about his work in Sydney? He has family and friends; would he want to leave them? Could I go to Australia and leave Tamana behind by himself and break the oath I made to my Tinana?” Mere finally resolved that it was no good wondering and worrying about all these matters, it was time to sit around the table and speak with Jacob. The subject had been avoided for too long.

On arriving at home, Mere gave the groceries to Mereoni to pack away and thoughtfully made her way down to the cottage. She tentatively opened the door and saw Jacob sitting at the coffee table with a notebook, furiously writing away. He turned, looked up and smiled as Mere entered the cottage, then they simultaneously cried, “we need to talk,” at which they both laughed.

Jacob took Mere by the hand and led her to the couch, where they sat down. He quickly began to speak, holding up his hand to cut-off Mere’s attempt to speak. “Mere I love you and I want to be with you. There are a number of hurdles to over-come including things like employment, immigration, family, friends and my current life in Sydney to name but a few.”

“I know Jacob, I feel…,” Jacob cut off Mere again.

“My biggest concern is in regard to your feelings for me. I have to get this off my chest.” Jacob taking her hand again. “Sometimes I feel you want to be with me, but on other occasions you seem to want to run away. I am getting confused and frustrated. I need to know 100% how you feel about me, before I can think of tackling any of the other difficult questions.”

“I am so sorry Jacob,” Mere apologised, composing herself before continuing. “I have been trying to fight the feelings I have for you, which is the source of your frustration and confusion. The situation relates to an oath I made to my Tinana at her graveside. It was my pledge to my dead Tinana that I would stay with Tamana and look after him till he dies. My love for you may make that oath I made at her graveside impossible to fulfil and I have feelings of guilt, regret and sorrow, all mixed up inside me.”

“Mere I am sure we can work around the pledge you made to your Tinana,” soothed Jacob, stroking Mere’s hand. “Maybe we can discuss it with your Tamana over dinner?”

“No, I don’t want to put him in a difficult position,” Mere standing. “I also don’t want you to have to compromise your life choices and make me feel guilty.” With that she was out the door and back to the house.

Jacob was left stunned and open-mouthed. “What can I do? I love her.”
